Crested Butte Academy's (CBA) cross-country running team performed well with some solid finishes at the Great American
Cross Country Festival in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, October 13.

Joe Bosshard competed in the high school boys' elite invitational five-kilometer Nike Race of Champions. His hard work and training paid off to place fifth in the classy field of 138 runners with the time of 15:54.4.

Cross-country director and coach Trent Sanderson said he was especially happy with Bosshard's preparation and the race.

"I felt the pace was a little slow out of the gates; therefore, it kept more athletes in the race for the last one kilometer. Joe did put pressure on the individual champion all the way up until the last 900 meters but, the leg speed in some of the runners allowed Joe to not react in the final one kilometer," said Sanderson.

He continued, "We are very happy with his performance at this time of the season."

Academy junior Maddison Garcia ran in the high school girls' elite invitational five-kilometer Nike Race of Champions. Against the toughest opposition she has faced this season and the toughest course all year, Garcia managed to run strongly to finish 19th with the time of 19:10.3.

Coach Sanderson said he was extremely pleased with Garcia's race.

"The field was as good as the championship race being held in December with the Footlocker National Champion, Nike Outdoor Mile Champion, the individual top runner in the United States this year, and three other Footlocker All-Americans. I was ecstatic with her performance," said Sanderson.

Michael Stears ran his first major meet with the Academy team in the five-kilometer invitational seeded race. Stears ran a sound race, finishing 36th with the time of 17:54.3, gaining valuable experience for competing at big meets. Stears was in the top 20 for half of the race.

The next big events for Coach Sanderson and the CBA team will be the AAU Regional and Footlocker Regional in November.
